Kathmandu, July 8

For want of an active vaccination campaign, over 1 million doses of Covid vaccines are going to waste in Nepal.

The Logistic Management Section of the Department of Health Services says one million and 79 doses of Covishield vaccines are crossing their expiry dates in the next two weeks.

As the vaccination campaign is remarkably slow across the nation these days, officials say only a nominal number of vaccines will be used in this period.

“To use all of them, you have to use 71,266 doses every day,” an official says, “But, now, only 2,000-3,000 people are getting vaccinated a day now.”

The official also blames a lack of interest in local governments for the slow vaccination campaign.

Sources say the country is losing millions of rupees as the vaccines are being thrown away unused.

Before this, the government has already let 67,000 doses of Moderna Covid vaccines go to waste.
