Melamchi water to reach Kathmandu by Dashain as project deadline extended

Kathmandu, June 25

The government has extended the final deadline of Melamchi Water Supply Project by three months. The project must be completed by August now.

It means Kathmanduites can still be hopeful that the water will reach their houses by Dashain festival (in October) this year.

The Italian contractor company for the Project, Co-operativa Muratori e Cementisti di Ravenna (CMC), had started the work in 2013 and was supposed to complete the project by June 14 this year.

Officials say the company has agreed to meet the extended deadline and begin the supply before Dashain.

Earlier, the government and the Italian company were at odds over the completion of the national pride project. A high-level delegate team from Italy had held a meeting with the Ministry of Water Supply on Friday requesting to extend the deadline for three more months.

According to Minister Bina Magar, the high-level team monitored the site and an agreement was reached about the new deadline.

Meanwhile, team leader of EPTISA, Thomas Barbich, who was working as an advisor in the project has been suspended for unsatisfactory performance. EPTISA is the advisor company appointed by the government for the Project.
