Melamchi-Bhotang road shut due to landslides, local people facing hardships galore

Sindhupalchok, July 3

The road connecting Khalde Khola with the site of Indrawati III hydropower project has shut due to landslides at different places.

Landslides have been continuing in the area for a week, causing the closure of the Melamchi-Bhotang road.

With vehicular movement halted, people from Tipeni Bazaar and around half-a-dozen VDCs in the vicinity have been facing difficulties. Landslides close to Khalde Khola are panicking the people of Lagarche VDC. Kale Gole of Gunsa said: With road shut, we have no option but to walk for hours to buy essentials. Worse still, there are no bridges over many rivers and streams along the way, meaning locals have no option but to wade through swollen rivulets and streams.

Locals fear that more landslides may occur anytime as last year’s quakes have made the land unstable. With landslides occurring everywhere, locals say even walking is fraught with risks.
