Kathmandu, October 31

Police on Tuesday morning arrested Maoist leader and former lawmaker Bal Krishna Dhungel, who was reportedly absconding following a Supreme Court order to arrest him.

Dhungel is convicted of murder Ujjan Kumar Shrestha of Pokali of Okhaldhunga district. The Court had handed down the life sentence with confiscation of all property in relation to the case, but the former lawmaker was absconding.

Dhungel, a permanent resident of Okhaldhunga, was residing in Satdobato of Lalitpur citing security reasons though his wife and children live in Kapan of Kathmandu.

A group of police personnel in civvies had arrested him in Satodobato at around 11:30 am and taken to the Nepal Police headquarters. Later, he has been taken to Dillibazaar Jail to execute the sentence.

The Kathmandu District Court says he has to stay behind bars for 12 years, five months and 22 days.

Meanwhile, some Maoist leaders have said the arrest was an interference in the peace process.

Just few days back, advocate Dinesh Tripathi had filed a case at the Supreme Court demanding Dhungel’s arrest.
