Maoist lawmaker Bhakti Prasad Pandey passes away

CPN-Maoist Centre leader and lawmaker Bhaktiprasad Pandey died while undergoing treatment at Nepal Cancer Hospital in Harisiddhi, Lalitpur, on Monday. Pandey was 62.

The Maoist leader had been receiving treament at the hospital for a year. His body will be kept at the party office in Paris Danda from 9 am to 11 am on Tuesday to enable people to pay their last respect.

Pandey was born in Arghatosh5, Arghakhanchi district, on December 20, 1954. He was also known in the party as Chacha. Pandey had shown ‘revolutionary traits’ since his childhood. At a young age of 18, Pandey had worked as commander of a popular revolt that took place in Harre Barre of Arghakhanchi district in 1972.

Pandey got into politics by taking membership of Pushpa Lal’s party in 1970, while in 1983 he joined Mohan Bikram Singh’s CPN-Masal from CPN-ML. He left Masal 14 years later. He, along with Dinanath Sharma and others, had staged a revolt within Masal and joined then CPN-Maoist. Pandey had established himself as an honest and fearless leader.

Two daughters, a son and wife survive Pandey.
