Manpower agencies shut against police raids

  • Manpower agencies say police do not have the authority to raid their offices
  • They point only the Department of Foreign Employment can investigate crimes related to foreign employment
  • Agencies say unauthorised action from state workers will hit the foreign employment sector severely

Kathmandu, February 25

Protesting recent police raids at manpower agencies, manpower agents shut their offices on Thursday. Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies, which called the shutdown, said agents will go for a pendown. They will, though, send employees, who have already obtained visas, within a week.

The association is organising a meeting of manpower agents. It has said police have no authority to raid manpower agencies’ offices, pointing that only the Department of Foreign Employment has the authority to investigate crimes related to foreign employment.

“Unauthorised state actors’ targeted actions like raids at manpower agencies, arrest of manpower agents and confiscation of documents are sure to affect the foreign employment sector severely,” the association said in a press release.
