Major in Oli’s team, arrested for gambling, resumes office without facing action

File: Nepal Army Major Rajendra Shahi

Kathmandu, November 28

A Nepal Army major arrested around one month ago while he was gambling has resumed his office recently. Rajendra Shahi, however, is yet to face any action for the offence. A police investigation is underway against him.

Shahi is a member of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s security team.

After the arrest, police had filed a case against him under the Gambling Act. However, the Kathmandu District Administration Office released him on bail of Rs 20,000.

But, the case is still underway. Assistant chief district officer at the DAO, Krishna Bahadur Katuwal, says the office might take three months to one year to issue the final decision.

Experts say the if the case had been forwarded to the military court, Shahi would have been remanded in custody till the final verdict. However, the Supreme Court, in an order issued in August last week, said the military court could not look after the cases involving off-duty military personnel.

Though he was sent back to duty, Shahi will be deprived of some opportunities inside the office and the case might affect his potential promotion, according to sources at the Nepal Army Headquarters.

Shahi has been claiming that a police officer is trying to frame him.
