Mahara likely to get another stint as DPM; Sharma may lead powerful home portfolio

Kathmandu, June 6

The outgoing Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara is likely to get a chance to repeat his stint as a DPM in the new government to be formed under the leadership of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba.

He, however, will not get the Ministry of Finance as it has been agreed that the Congress party will lead the ministry.

Mahara will lead the eight-member team of the CPN-Maoist Centre in the coalition government as a DPM and in-charge of a powerful ministry. Most likely, he will be given the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Meanwhile, the Maoist party is sending outgoing Energy Minister Janardan Sharma as the Minister for Home Affairs.

It has been learned that during the intra-party discussion, leaders including Top Bahadur Rayamajhi and Shakti Basnet had also claimed the powerful department, but Sharma’s name was finalised owing to his popularity in ending load shedding.

Rayamajhi’s name was rejected as he publicly opposed to the party’s stand on delineation of provincial boundaries. Likewise, he was accused of increasing load shedding during his time at the Ministry of Energy in KP Sharma Oli-led government.

Likewise, Basnet also could not convince the party leadership as the party could not perform well in his home district, Jajarkot, in the local level elections.
