Local governments across country presenting their annual budget plan today

Kathmandu, June 24

Most of all 753 local governments in the country are presenting their annual budget plans for the next fiscal year 2020/2021 on Wednesday.

Whereas the constitution stipulates that the federal government should introduce its annual budget on Jeth 15, the Intergovernmental Fiscal Arrangement Act stipulates the date of Asar 1 for provincial budget statements and Asar 10 for local ones.

However, it is feared that a few local units will fail to announce their plans today due to different reasons.

Bhim Prasad Dhungana, the general secretary of Municipal Association of Nepal, an organisation of people’s representatives of municipalities of the country, says the municipal governments were under pressure to prepare the budget on time as they were busy with controlling the Covid-19 outbreak and managing Nepalis who recently returned home from foreign employment.

The local units are expected to announce the plans of spending Rs 330 billion in total.
