Lawmakers urge government to conduct local, provincial, federal elections at the earliest

Kathmandu, January 20

Lawmakers have called the government to announce the date for elections without delay. Taking special time during Friday’s meeting of the Parliament, they urged the government to announce the date for three-tier elections — local level, provincial and federal — at the soonest.

Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Poudel demanded that the government conduct elections for local levels or local bodies soon.  Together with a Constitution amendment proposal, there’s a need to take the country towards elections, he said, ruling out the possibility of conducting federal elections without conducting local elections. He said the government should conduct local, provincial and federal elections, in that order.

Leader of the main opposition CPN-UML also called the government to fix the date for elections early on. Rawal accused the government of exchanging ministerial positions with Constitution amendment. He said: Prime Minister should clarify in the Parliament as to why it has not announced the date for elections and why anti-national activities are taking place.

Parshu Ram Tamang of Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Mina Pun of Rastriya Janamorcha, among others, also said the government should conduct local polls as early as possible because people are facing difficulties in the absence of local bodies.
