Lawmakers on Monday criticised the Prachanda government’s decision to give former minister and Nepali Congress leader Sujata Koirala Rs 50 lakh for her treatment.

At Monday’s meeting of the Parliament, lawmakers, including Yagyaraj Sunuwar and Mira Pun, protested against the decision.

CPN-UML lawmaker Sunuwar said: People are committing suicide by jumping off the hospital for want of basic medicine. What is the government thinking about the treatment of poor people like these?

Rastriya Janamorcha lawmaker Pun objected to the decision, saying: People are dying for want of treatment, while the government is giving dole to well-off people for their treatment.

Anuradha Thapamagar, lawmaker from the Nepal Workers’ and Peasants’ Party, said Prime Minister should make a pledge to reclaim money given from the state coffers to affluent people for their treatment.
