Landslides kill five people in Gulmi, ‘worst flooding’ in the district in 55 years

Landslides resulting from torrential rains have killed five people in different parts of Gulmi district on Monday.

The deceased include Kalika Darji (62), Tulasi Darji (49) and Asmita Darji (19) of Maldi, Hastichaur VDC-1.

Sujan Rana (8) and Simana Rana (6), son and daughter of Gopal Rana also died in a landslide at Bisukharka VDC-9, deputy superintendent of police at Gulmi district police office, Bhola Rawal, informed.

Bishnu Saru (50) of Hastichaur was injured in the landslide. Police said they are finding it hard to rescue the Ranas with landslide debris still crashing close to their house.

Meanwhile, a flooded Badighat Sream has swept away a suspension bridge connecting Musikot with Wami and another suspension bridge connecting Gwalichaur with Paudi. Flooding has put Bhuwachidi, Majuwa, Sahaghat, Chorkate and Rudrabeni of Gulmi and Kharwang Bazaar of Baglung district under grave threat. Local people have begun shifting to safer places.

Local people say hundreds of ropanis of land has gone under water in the worst flooding in 55 years. Flooding and landslides have caused damage to more than a dozen houses and sheds, it is learnt.
