Landslides, floods kill three in Kalikot, eight go missing

Kathmandu, May 20

Three people died and four went missing in rain-triggered landslides at Gajbazaar and Lalighat of Kotvada VDC, Kalikot district, on Thursday night. Eight people sustained injuries in the floods and landslides, Kalikot DSP Kishan Singh Budal said.

The dead include Dhanmati Tamta (50) of Syuna VDC-2, Hira Tiruwa (30) of Syuna-5, Lakshyu Bhandari (25) of Dhaulagoh VDC-9. The missing include Sanjite Tamata (50) of Syuna-2, Shristha Bam (6) of Thirpu-5, Mani Subedhi (50) of Raku-2 and a four-month-old boy from Gotri VDC-1, Bajura.

The injured are receiving treatment at Kalikot district hospital. According to initial estimates, floods and landslides have caused losses worth more than five million rupees.

Rains after a prolonged spell of drought had made local people happy. But their happiness was short-lived as downpour continued late into the night and triggered floods, giving them no opportunity to flee to safety.
