KU officials accused of irregularities in assistant professors’ appointment

Kathmandu University

Kathmandu, July 31

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority has received a complaint against Kathmandu University vice-chancellor Ram Kantha Makaju, registrar Subodh Sharma and School of Arts dean Sagar Sharma, claiming they appointed three assistant professors breaching existing laws.

Laxman D Pant and Mahendra Sapkota, who also had competed for the positions, filed the complaint claiming one assistant professor in each of journalism, development studies and painting departments was appointed without following due procedures.

Pant says the university appointed its own staff, appointed two years ago on contract without any competition, as assistant professors now though the applications were called for an open competition.

He has further accused the university of ignoring an application that he filed as per the Right to Information Act, seeking information about the appointment process.

Meanwhile, the university has refused the charges. The university’s spokesperson Hem Raj Kafle says Pant and Sapkota resorted to the complaint after their failure to get appointments.

He also clarifies that the university has its own rules about how to respond to applications that seek information and the university’s executive council will make a decision soon.

Kafle maintains the university will provide all information to the Commission if the anti-corruption body launches a probe.

Makaju and Sharma duo were not available for comments.
