Kathmandu water tankers have stickers to signal water quality now

Kathmandu, April 18

Every water tanker in Kathmandu Valley will have a sticker on it from Tuesday onwards.

The Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Management Board under the Ministry of Water Supply and Sanitation implemented the new rule in a bid to promote the supply of healthy water.

What means what?

Stickers of three colours will be used. The blue sticker means water is appropriate for drinking on the basis of physical, chemical and microbiological composition.

Likewise, the yellow sticker means it is okay physically and chemically, but not appropriate to drink microbiologically. Such water can be used in other tasks except drinking. When no any option is available, people are advised to drink such water after boiling.

Water supplied by tankers with green sticker can never be used in drinking.

Minister for Water Supply and Sanitation, Jiwan Bahadur Shahi has appealed to members of the public to check the status of water tankers before using water supplied by them.

Meanwhile, the government made it mandatory for every tanker to undergo tests and get verified with the appropriate sticker. Tankers plying without the markers would be booked.

There are around 600 water tankers being used in Kathmandu Valley to supply 50 million litre water. Most of the tankers, however, are not registered with the government.
