Former Prime Minister and senior Nepal Communist Party leader Jhalanath Khanal has called for left-wing forces to unite on the basis of common policies and principles, saying the country is facing serious instability and uncertainty.
Speaking at the launch of Sahakari Thagiko Jaal (The Cooperative Fraud Network), a book written by Rastriya Janamorcha General Secretary Manoj Bhatta, Khanal said the country’s crisis had deepened as the left-wing movement weakened.
He said there was also a lack of a culture of even minimal unity among left-wing forces to move forward together.
“The communist movement has claimed from the beginning that it is the most patriotic movement, but because of our own mistakes and compromises, nationalism has reached a serious juncture,” Khanal said.
Khanal stressed the need to establish a clear basis for political unity, arguing that simply bringing leaders together would not create a lasting alliance.
“Unity cannot be achieved simply by bringing heads together. It can be sustained only when it is built on the basis of policy, principles, ideals and the right ideological and political direction,” he said, urging left-wing forces to make efforts towards unity.
He said there was no alternative to bringing left-wing forces together to strengthen national interests, protect Nepal’s 5,000-year-old cultural heritage and pursue socio-economic transformation.
Khanal calls for cooperative law reforms
At the same event, Khanal called for immediate amendments to existing policies and laws to address the crisis and alleged fraud in the cooperative sector.
He said the cooperative sector could not be taken to a new level under its existing structure and regulatory framework.
Khanal stressed the need to establish a new policy and legal framework to make the cooperative sector stronger and more secure.
