The United Nations cultural agency, UNESCO, has launched preparations to include Janakpur’s Janaki Mandir (Temple) on its World Heritage List.

UNESCO representative Christian Manhart and officials of the Department of Archeology officials visited Janakpur on Thursday and met Mayor Lal Kishor Sah to discuss the issue.

On the occasion, Manhart has said that a few things had to be done before the temple was listed as a World Heritage Site officially.

Manhart said that he had been given a book regarding infrastructural development needed around the heritage sites and added that he would make sure necessary steps would be followed before listing the temple on the list.

Janaki Mandir is a Hindu temple in Janakpur in the Mithila region of Nepal, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Sita.

It is a three-storied structure made entirely of stone and marble. The temple is believed to have been constructed in 1910. The site was designated as a UNESCO Tentative Site in 2008.
