The Election Commission has started discussing a government proposal to postpone the second round of local elections until at least a week.

The second round of elections were supposed to be held on June 14, a month after the first round of polling. However, the government, in a bid to ‘accommodate’ the newly-formed Rastriya Janata Party is preparing to postpone voting.

According to a source, the commission will choose between June 21 and June 28, depending on the feedback it receives from the commissioners. The commission is likely to choose June 28 as polling day as the Islamic holy month of Ramadan also ends on June 27. Similarly, June 29 is National Paddy day, and it would not be convenient to hold elections then.

The Commission is expected to make a formal announcement soon.
