Upon the release of the original iPad, Apple formally declared that it is a “magical and revolutionary” device for “browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading e-books, and more.”

Like other Apple devices, the iPad also runs on Apple’s own iOS and iPadOS operating systems.

The introduction of the 2021 iPad Pro lineup was made just over a year after the 2020 iPad Pro arrived. The new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro offer a number of hardware updates and capabilities as they are not just the switch to the new powerful Apple Silicon chip. If you are confused about what to choose from the two, the following differences might help you in your decision.

  • Apple says the new iPad Pro with M1 chip offers 50% faster CPU performance and 40% faster GPU performance than the A12Z in the 2020 iPad Pro.
  • Storage is up to 2x faster with capacities now up to 2TB, and the unified RAM on the M1 chip comes in 8GB or 16GB (latter for the 1/2TB storage models).
  • Thunderbolt is now included on the iPad Pro, which could be compelling for power users with big bandwidth needs and those with Thunderbolt displays. For connectivity on the go, 5G comes with the new cellular iPad Pro models.
  • Also, the new 2021 iPad Pro models work with the second-gen Apple Pencil, the Magic Keyboard, and other iPad Pro accessories.
  • The display is identical comparing the new 11-inch iPad Pro to the 2020 version. However, the 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro brings the new Liquid Retina Display XDR with mini-LED tech. That means full-screen brightness up to 1000 nits with peak brightness up to 1600 when viewing and editing what Apple calls “true-to-life HDR content.” It is all thanks to 10,000 mini-LEDs that offer over 2500 local dimming zones on the new Liquid Retina Display XDR.
  • Talking about the camera setup, the new iPad Pro comes with an updated front and rear cameras and the majority of changes come with a new TrueDepth front-facing camera. The main new feature – Center Stage – comes with the 12 MP TrueDepth ultra-wide lens.
  • The size, weight, and battery life are identical on the new 11-inch iPad compared to the 2020 models. The changes can be seen in the new 12.9-inch iPad which is a bit heavier and thicker, likely because of the new mini-LED Liquid Retina Display XDR.

Overall, the new 2021 iPad Pro lineup includes some notable improvements over the 2020 iPads. The hardware has seen some big improvements across the board with the 2021 iPad Pro. The power on the new iPad Pro may be overwhelming as this gadget is a beast in terms of performance.
