Inflation on food and dairy products continues to increase, say NRB report

Inflation Nepal
Food prices have skyrocketed since the pandemic.

Kathmandu, July 10

Inflation in the country has become stable in the current fiscal year compared to 2021/22. That said, inflation on daily consumables continues to rise rapidly.

According to the Nepal Rastra Bank’s report, Nepal’s current inflation rate stands at 6.3 per cent. This was 8.56 in June 2022.

But despite year-on-year inflation on the decline, prices of daily consumables have increased significantly over the past year.

The price of the spices sub-group has witnessed a significant increase of 35.29 per cent. Additionally, the prices of restaurant and hotel services have risen by 14.36 per cent, while food and food products have experienced a price hike of 13.06 per cent.

Similarly, the prices of dairy products and eggs have increased by 10.98 per cent.

According to the NRB data, the price of tobacco products has increased less than that of food. The prices of tobacco products have increased by only 8.49 per cent.

This indicates a relatively lower rate of inflation in the tobacco sector as compared to the food sector, suggesting differential impacts on consumer spending and price dynamics between these two categories.

The NRB’s data also suggests that inflation was the highest in Kathmandu valley compared to places in Nepal.

According to NRB, the inflation rate in the Kathmandu valley stands at 7.19 per cent. In the Terai region, the inflation rate is recorded at 6.93 per cent, while in the hills, it is 6.28 per cent, and in the mountainous regions, it is 6.39 per cent.
