Kathmandu, August 6
Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth is set to visit Nepal later this month. According to a high-level government source, General Seth is scheduled to arrive in Nepal on August 16. He assumed office as the Chief of the Indian Army on June 30, 2026.
It is a long-standing tradition for the serving Chief of the Indian Army to be conferred the honorary rank of General of the Nepal Army. Likewise, newly appointed Army chiefs of Nepal and India traditionally pay official visits to each other’s countries.
During his visit, General Seth is also expected to pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Balendra Shah. Although a proposal for the meeting has been sent to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, it has not yet been confirmed.
The Nepal Army and the Indian Army share a long-standing historical relationship. For nearly 75 years, the two countries have maintained the tradition of conferring honorary general ranks on each other’s Army chiefs.
According to the Nepal Army Headquarters, the practice of awarding the honorary rank dates back to 1950.
The current Chief of the Nepal Army, Ashok Raj Sigdel, has also received the honorary rank of General of the Indian Army.
On Dec. 12, 2024 (27 Mangsir 2081 BS), Indian President Droupadi Murmu conferred the honorary rank on General Sigdel during a special ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
