Kathmandu, October 20

The impeachment motion registered against CIAA Chief Commissioner Lok Man Singh Karki will be presented in the Parliament on Thursday itself.

On Wednesday, 157 lawmakers from the ruling CPN-Maoist Centre and the main opposition CPN-UML had signed on the proposal and registered it in the Parliament. The Parliament Secretariat has notified all concerned about this development. With this, the CIAA chief has automatically been suspended.

On Thursday’s Parliament meeting, preparations are afoot to present the motion. According to a source, two meetings will take place in the House on Thursday itself.

In the first meeting, Speaker Onsari Gharti will set the time for discussions on the motion. Said a secretariat official: The second meeting will discuss the motion.

If discussions end, the Parliament will send the motion to the Impeachment Recommendation Committee, formed yesterday, today itself.

The committee will prepare and submit its report to the Parliament after taking statement of the accused, collecting evidence and giving the accused opportunities to come clean. If the committee suggests in favour of pursuing the impeachment motion, the same will be presented to the House for a decision. If two-third majority of the House passes the motion, Karki will lose his job automatically.

The entire process is sure to take some time. Speaker Gharti is leaving for Switzerland on Friday and she will return home on October 28. The process is likely to start after Tihar festival (October 29-31).
