House to study Supreme Court’s verdict on Ncell CGT

A meeting of the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee in the House of Representatives

Kathmandu, August 30

A committee in the House of Representatives has decided to study a recent verdict of the Supreme Court regarding the capital gains tax calculation of Ncell, a private telecommunications service providing company.

A meeting of the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee held on Friday made the decision to study the verdict handed down by the court earlier this week after some experts and stakeholders criticised it. Earlier, some members of the committee had demanded that the panel look into the issue.

The panel’s chair Krishna Bhakta Pokharel says, “A parliamentary committee cannot tell the judiciary what it should do. Neither will we question the verdict. But, it can study the verdicts once they become issues of public concern.”

He says the members can express their opinions about the issue in the next meeting.

In a surprising move to many, the apex court had dismissed the calculation made by the Large Taxpayers’ Office four months ago.
