Kathmandu, October 6

Minister for Home Bimalendra Nidhi said on Thursday that the onus is on the present government to  conduct three-tier elections — local, provincial and federal — by amending the new Constitution.

He directed Nepal Police to do its duties keeping this priority of the government in mind. While addressing a special function organised at NP headquarters in Naxal to mark the 61st Police Day, Home Minister Nidhi said NP has managed to win the trust of the public.

With the Charter already promulgated, this government has the responsbility to conduct local elections, Home Minister Nidhi said, calling Nepal Police to prioritise local elections.

Nidhi also spoke of the need to provide for families of police personnel, who attained martyrdom in the line of duty. He appealed IGP and Home Secretary to prepare a working procedure to provide education and jobs for dependents of police personnel, who have attained martyrdom.

Nidhi said he is with Nepal Police, and called the police force to act in line with the Constitution and as per the government’s directives.

At the same programme, Nepal Police IGP Upendra Kanta Aryal said the Home Ministry and the government should act as the guardian of the police force, pointing that providing physical infrastructure alone is not enough.

IGP Aryal said: As chief of the Nepal Police, I will always be committed to providing for families of police personnel, who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

Lauding a proud history is not enough when it comes to running the police organisation, Aryal said, adding that the government should work as guardian of the police force.
