Refuting a previous claim that the then Nepali soldiers defeated the English army at Sindhuligadhi of modern-day Sindhuli district on Kartik 24, in the second week of November, in 1767 (Ba 1,824), the historians have now said that the day of victory was Asoj 15, in the first week of October.
Though the local government of the historical site, Kamalamai Municipality, has been celebrating the Victory Day on Kartik 24 every year, it was a wrong day, according to them.
Speaking at an interaction in Kathmandu on Sunday, historian Dinesh Raj Panta said the English troop had returned from Sindhuligadhi after the loss in 1767, hence the Victory Day should be celebrated on the same day. “We should not tamper with history. Otherwise, the next generations will curse us.”
Another historian Prem Singh Basnyat said the Sindhuligadhi war was very important in Nepali history as the unification of Nepal would not have been possible if there had not been the war.
Meanwhile, some artists are organising an art camp to commemorate the victory in Sindhuligadhi from Tuesday to Friday. “The artworks would be used to promote Sindhuligadhi,” a Nepal Academy of Fine Arts academician Sushma Rajbhandari informs.
