Kathmandu, July 1

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a red alert for 34 districts, warning of heavy rainfall as the monsoon becomes more active. The affected districts span across Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces.

In addition to the red alert, a yellow alert, indicating a medium risk of heavy rainfall, has been issued for 26 districts. A red alert signifies a high risk, while a yellow alert indicates a medium risk.

High-Risk Districts (Red Alert)

  • Koshi Province: Taplejung, Panchthar, Sankhuwasabha, Tehrathum, Morang, Jhapa, Sunsari, Ilam, Dhankuta, Bhojpur, Khotang, Solukhumbu, and Okhaldhunga.
  • Bagmati Province: Makwanpur, Chitwan, Sindhupalchok, and Dolakha.
  • Gandaki Province: Myagdi, Baglung, Kaski, Parbat, Syangja, Tanahun, Nawalparasi East, and Lamjung.

Medium-Risk Districts (Yellow Alert)

The yellow alert covers districts that face a medium risk of heavy rainfall.

Monsoon Activity and Forecast

The monsoon has become more active due to a low-pressure system over the past few days. The department had earlier issued a cautionary notice from June 26 to July 1. As the low-pressure system is expected to remain near Nepal’s southern region, the monsoon is anticipated to become even more active, prompting the department to issue another cautionary notice from July 1 to July 4.

Meteorologists predict that from Monday, July 1, to Thursday, July 4, the country will experience general to complete overcast conditions, with light to moderate rainfall expected in many areas. Heavy rainfall is likely in some parts of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, as well as in a few locations in Madhesh, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces. Additionally, very heavy rainfall is possible at one or two locations in Koshi, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts.
