Kathmandu, November 6

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ claimed on Sunday that the government’s Constitution amendment proposal has not proposed making naturalised citizens eligible for important constitutional positions such as President and Prime Minister.

He told Onlinekhabar: I was the one, who prepared the Constitution amendment proposal. There has been no talk whatsoever on making naturalised citizens eligible for positions like President and Prime Minister. There’s no proposal that proposes amending the Constitution to make naturalised citizens eligible for the posts of President and Prime Minister.

Homework on Charter amendment is afoot, Prachanda said, adding that naturalised citizens cannot be granted the right to be elected to important constitutional positions like Prime Minister and President.

Prachanda, who is also chair of the CPN-Maoist Centre, said: Important positions like President and Prime Minister should not be ‘given’ to naturalised citizens.

Meanwhile, Pampha Bhusal, spokesperson for the Centre, said making naturalised citizens eligible for constitutional positions like Prime Minister and President is out of the question.

Bhusal told Onlinekhabar: There’s no question of making naturalised citizens eligible for important positions like President, Prime Minister, Army Chief, Police Chief and chiefs of constitutional bodies. Interim Constitution has also deemed these positions off-limit for naturalised citizens.

Bhusal claimed that elements seeking to weaken unity between Nepalis are spreading rumours. She said they will not amend the Constitution that will make naturalised citizens eligible for major constitutional positions.
