Kathmandu, March 9

The Sherpas are celebrating their new year, Gyalpo Lhosar, for three days starting Wednesday.

Community members mark the festival by meeting relatives, exchanging greetings and feasting on delicacies.

President Bidhya Bhandari and Vice-president sent their best wishes to the Sherpa community on the occasion of their festival. They expressed hope that the festival will help maintain close ties and goodwill existing between Nepali peoples. Occasions like this should inspire peoples to preserve and promote their traditions, they said.

The government has declared Wednesday a public holiday.
