Kathmandu, May 3

President Bidya Devi Bhandari has removed governors (province chiefs) of Gandaki and Sudurpaschim, Amik Sherchan and Sharmila Kumari Panta respectively, on Monday.

A cabinet meeting held on Sunday had made the decision.

Meanwhile, Sita Paudel and Ganga Prasad Yadav have been appointed governors of Gandaki and Sudurpaschim respectively.

Both Sherchan and Panta are considered close to the CPN-Maoist Centre and they were appointed in November 2019 when the Maoist Centre and the ruling CPN-UML were parts of the same party.

In November 2019, all existing governors were sacked to be replaced with four UML and three Maoist favourites. One of the Maoist picks, Tilak Pariyar (Province 2) has already been removed in February 2021.

The article 165 of the constitution has it that the province chief (governor) loses the position if the president removes him/her prior to completing the term.
