Govt ready to discuss why constitution amendment: PM

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli addresses the House of Representatives in Kathmandu, on Tuesday, May 7, 2019.

Kathmandu, May 7

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has clarified that his government is ready to hold talks with the parties demanding constitution amendment. He, however, says the parties should not raise the demand all the time without clarifying what they exactly mean.

Prime Minister Oli’s statement comes at a time when the Madhesh-centric Rastriya Janata Party Nepal has reiterated the demand for constitution amendment. As Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal and Naya Shakti Party Nepal also merged to form the Samajwadi Party Nepal, the new party is also likely to raise the issue.

“There has been concerns about amendment to the constitution and its acceptability,” Oli said at a meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, “I agree, the constitution is not any document that cannot be amended. But, the amendment has now been like a song that you can sing anytime.”

“Let’s sit and talk why we need the amendment.”
