Govt opening shop to sell clothes produced by jailbirds

Workers are constructing a shop to sell clothing items made by jailbirds, in Kathmandu, in July 2019.

Kathmandu, July 14

The government is planning to establish a shop that will exclusively sell various clothing items produced by jailbirds.

The Department of Industry will open the shop on its own premises in Tripureshwar of Kathmandu.

The Department’s Director General Binod Prakash Singh informs that the shop will begin its operation from the next month.

Currently, construction works are underway at the side. The government is spending Rs 2 million to erect the truss structure.

The shop will make people aware that jailbirds in Nepal produce quality bedclothes, curtains, saris and other clothing items, hopes the Department.

Recently, some of the clothes manufactured behind bars had received popularity during an exhibition at Bhrikutimandap.

The government has been providing various skill-based training courses to jailbirds serving longer terms so that they can find better livelihood options once they come out. Tailoring and weaving is one of the most popular courses among them.
