Kathmandu, June 13

The government on Thursday formed a committee to recommend solutions to various problems recently surfaced in the mountaineering sector.

The five member committee is headed by Ghana Shyam Upadhyaya, chief of the Human Resource Management and Tourism Promotion Division of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation.

The Department of Tourism says Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli made a decision to form the panel.

The decision follows a significantly high number of deaths on various peaks and its coverage in the international media, which the government claims is misleading.

The committee is authorised to find causes of recent deaths on Mount Everest and other mountains and recommend solutions to them.

The Department’s chief Danduraj Ghimire says the team will also study rules and regulations exercised in the sector and terms and responsibilities of the concerned mechanisms. It is also authorised to recommend improvements in them.
