Govt doesn’t have any idea about magnitude of Covid-19 losses: Deuba

Sher Bahadur Deuba addresses a Parliament meeting.

Kathmandu, May 17

The main opposition leader in Parliament, Sher Bahadur Deuba, says the government does not have any idea about the magnitude of losses to be caused by the Covid-19 crisis.

Addressing the House of Representatives meeting on Sunday, Deuba said the government had already missed making preparations to face the losses.

Participating in a discussion on the government’s annual policy and programme presented by President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Friday, the Nepali Congress president stated the government should have been able to present itself as a guardian of the citizens affected by the crisis.

“We had expected that the government would address such issues in its policy and solve all such problems by properly utilising the available resources,” he said mentioning the first death incident and economic effects of the crisis, “But, the government’s policy and programme has conveyed another message.”

“The first message is that the government does not have any idea about the losses caused by and to be caused by the Covid-19.” He presented the low number of coronavirus tests conducted in the past four months as evidence of the government’s incompetence.

“What did the government do during this lockdown?” he questioned.

The discussion on the annual policy and programme that the House began today will continue till Tuesday.
