Government announces reconstruction drive for structures damaged by earthquakes and monsoon disasters

Kathmandu, January 6

The government is set to launch a reconstruction campaign this year for structures damaged by earthquakes and monsoon-induced disasters. The announcement will coincide with the National Earthquake Safety Day on January 15, as part of the government’s broader disaster recovery strategy.

The reconstruction and strengthening of infrastructure, including roads, bridges, government buildings, urban infrastructure, electricity, alternative energy, irrigation systems, private housing, and drinking water facilities, are estimated to cost Rs 98.65 billion. This estimate was presented during the 15th meeting of the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management held on Monday.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, chair of the council, directed officials to finalise a concrete plan for the reconstruction announcement on Earthquake Safety Day. He also instructed the concerned ministries to complete any pending damage assessments to ensure the campaign is comprehensive.

Following earthquakes in western Nepal and the 2081 BS monsoon disasters, the Prime Minister emphasised the need for a solid reconstruction plan and directed the National Authority for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management to take the lead.

The council is scheduled to reconvene on January 12 to finalise discussions and approve the plan before the official announcement on January 15.

Unfinished reconstruction in affected areas

The reconstruction and strengthening of structures damaged in districts like Doti, Bajura, Bajhang, and Jajarkot remain incomplete. Many affected families continue to live in temporary shelters, enduring harsh weather conditions. Similarly, those displaced by floods and landslides face similar challenges.

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak stated that the government is expediting reconstruction efforts. “Most of the physical structures damaged by monsoon-induced disasters and earthquakes have been reconstructed. The government is working to complete the remaining projects as quickly as possible,” said Minister Lekhak.

He also mentioned that legal and financial arrangements have been made for reconstruction in areas where damage assessments have been completed. Assessments for the damages caused by the Jajarkot earthquake will begin in the third week of January, according to the minister.
