Biratnagar, May 31

Nepal Police SSP Shyam Khatri, who was found involved in multiple gold smuggling cases along with the supposed racketeer Chudamani Upreti ‘Gore’, has surrendered to the Morang District Court on Thursday.

Khatri was on the run since police began investigation into the case. After his arrest last week, Gore had been telling police and the court that he was just an agent of the gang and SSP Khatri could reveal more information as he was working under the official’s instructions.

Khatri would help the racket transport gold by taking a bribe of Rs 50,000 per kilo, according to Gore. It is said that he received Rs 11.2 million from the racket in total.

The International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) had already issued a diffusion notice against Khatri.

Around two years ago, police had arrested Khatri in connection with another gold smuggling case. The court, however, had acquitted him.
