Design and display
The design of Google Pixel 7a is similar to Pixel 7. It has a plastic back instead of a glass with a slight size difference change in the pill-shaped camera cutout placement. It has a metal frame which makes it feel premium. Its size, lengthwise, is a bit small than Pixel 7 and the bezels on the front are also a bit thicker than Pixel 7. The front has a hole-punch selfie camera. Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protects the entire display.
Pixel 7a features a full-screen 6.1-inch OLED display with a 20:9 aspect ratio and FHD+ resolution (1080×2400) at 429 PPI. It offers a smooth display experience with a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz. The refresh rate is improved from Pixel 6a and is the same as Pixel 7. It also features a high brightness mode, a contrast ratio of over 1,000,000:1 and HDR support, and supports a full 24-bit depth for displaying 16 million colours.
Performance and storage
Pixel 7a is powered by the Google Tensor G2 chipset, which features an octa-core CPU configuration consisting of two Cortex-X1 cores clocked at 2.85 GHz, two Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.35 GHz, and four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.80 GHz. The graphics are handled by Mali-G710 MP7 and run on Android 13 as its operating system.
It also has its own separate physical security processor called Titan M2, which along with the main chipset and OS, prevents the user’s data and also stops them from downloading harmful files or apps.
It is available in one RAM and storage option of 8GB and 128GB respectively. It does not have external MicroSD card slots to increase the storage externally.
Google Pixel 7a has a dual camera setup on the back with an incredible jump in sensor size from Pixel 6a. It now has a 64MP Quad PD Quad Bayer wide main camera with a pixel width of 0.8μm, an aperture of ƒ/1.89, and an 80° field of view. It features a 1/1.73″ image sensor size and supports super res zoom up to 8x. The secondary camera is a 13MP ultrawide camera with a pixel width of 1.12μm, an aperture of ƒ/2.2, and a 120° field of view. It includes lens correction and autofocus with dual pixel phase detection. It has optical and electronic image stabilisation and also offers a fast camera launcher.
The camera features of the phone include photo unblur, magic eraser, night sight, long exposure, real tone, face unblur, panorama, manual white balancing, locked folder, top shot, portrait mode, portrait light, super res zoom, motion auto focus, frequent faces, dual exposure controls and live HDR+.
Pixel 7a supports 4K video recording at 30FPS and 60FPS, 1080p video recording at 30FPS and 60FPS, and offers cinematic pan and slo-mo video support up to 240FPS. Additional video features include 4K timelapse with stabilisation, astrophotography timelapse, optical image stabilisation, fused video stabilisation, 4K cinematic pan video stabilisation, 4K locked video stabilisation, 1080p active video stabilisation, digital zoom up to 5x, and supports video formats such as HEVC (H.265) and AVC (H.264).
The front camera of the phone has a 13MP resolution with a pixel width of 1.12μm and an aperture of ƒ/2.2. It supports 4K video recording at 30FPS and 1080p video recording at 30FPS.
Battery and others
The Pixel 7a is equipped with a non-removable li-po 4385mAh battery. It supports 18W wired charging and 7.5W wireless charging. Although wireless charging is of less power, many other smartphones at this price do not have this feature. For IP rating, it has IP67 water resistance.
The device features an under-display fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication, as well as a proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, accelerometer, gyrometer, magnetometer, and barometer for various functionalities.
It comes with stereo speakers for an enhanced audio experience. The phone does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack. For wireless connectivity, it supports Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) with 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz frequencies. Bluetooth v5.3 + LE is also supported for wireless communication with other devices.
It is available in four colours: coral, sea, charcoal and snow. The coral colour is Google Store-exclusive, meaning that it can be bought only from Google Store.
The price of Google Pixel 7a is expected to be around Rs 78,000 for the 8/128GB option in Nepal.
Google Pixel 7a has a few downgrades from its brother, Pixel 7, released six months ago. This year’s Google smartphones will have a new chipset, but Tensor G2 in Pixel 7a, along with the latest Android version, can outrun many smartphones in the software experience in this price range. It stands out as an excellent premium mid-range option in Nepal too.
