Police have received complaints related to thefts and cases of cheating in the Kathmandu Valley during Dashain festivities. This, despite the law enforcement’s claims that crimes went down this Dashain because of stepped-up security.

During Dashain, thieves struck the rented apartment of lawmaker Ram Krishna Yadav in Koteshwor and decamped with gold jewellery and a laptop, police said. Yadav told police he came to know about the theft, worth Rs 1.1 lakh, upon returning to his rented apartment from his home in Dhanusha district. Police said Yadav informed them upon finding the window of his rented apartment broken and the laptop and jewellery gone.

In Lalitpur, according to police, thieves fled with property worth around five lakh rupees from a house during Dashain. So far, we have received complaints about eight cases of theft in the Kathmand Valley.

People, who left the valley for their ancestral homes during Dashain holidays, are gradually returning, police said, anticipating more complaints about property-related crimes once they return.

During Dashain last year, police said, 61 cases of theft occurred. This year, we mobilised in every Tole, so the incidents of theft and burglary went down, police said.
