A gabion wall built to protect the Prithvi Highway at Krishnabhir has collapsed following continuous rainfall, putting a newly constructed road track at risk.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Prakash Dahal of the District Police Office, Dhading, said the gabion wall supporting the old section of the highway gave way due to the persistent rain.
Part of the wall along the old road has slipped downhill, raising concerns about the safety of the new track constructed at Krishnabhir.
“The gabion wall along the old road, just below the newly opened track, has collapsed. This could affect the new track,” Dahal said.
The Department of Roads has also confirmed that the gabion wall on the river side of the Prithvi Highway at Krishnabhir has shifted downhill.
According to the department, there is currently no visible problem with the slope above the road currently in operation.
The department said the project team is monitoring the condition of the road.
Kumar Basnet, ward chair of Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality-7, said the gabion support built to stabilise the new track had collapsed because of the continuous rainfall.
“The support section of the gabion built for the new track has collapsed. It is extremely dangerous. Since the lower section has already given way, the risk is very high. I request people not to travel along this road,” Basnet said.
Floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers on August 26 and 30 damaged the highway section at Krishnabhir, leaving the road closed for an extended period.
After the floods cut away part of the highway, a new track was constructed at the damaged section, allowing traffic to resume on September 17.
