Minister for Education, Science and Technology Giriraj Mani Pokharel has suggested that the Tribhuvan University Free Student Union elections be held by mid-April.
Minister Pokharel, who was speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives on Monday, added that the opposition party should also come on board if the elections are to be successfully held.
“This election is of prime importance which is why everyone needs to come on board for it to become successful. We have to do it by April so that the next educational session isn’t affected,” he said.
The current term of the free student union office bearers, who were elected two years, is coming to an end at the end of this month. However, the NCP and Nepali Congress-aligned students have not met to facilitate the elections. The NC has been calling on the university to postpone the elections citing problems within its student wing.
Minister Pokharel said that PM KP Sharma Oli had already talked to NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba and other members of the NC regarding the issue.
