Various issues from sociocultural, political and economic spheres have been featured on the front pages of major Nepali and English broadsheet dailies published from Kathmandu on Sunday. The death of a cyclist after he fell into an open manhole in Kirtipur of Kathmandu has been covered on the front page of almost every newspaper today. Likewise, they also have given significant priority to the death of three persons in a road accident in Kavre, near Kathmandu, yesterday.

Discussions held among leaders during the tea party hosted by the Nepal Communist Party has also made it to the front pages today. Recently surfaced political ‘crisis’ in Sri Lanka has also been published on the front pages of major newspapers.

Cyclist falls into manhole to death in Kathmandu

Annapurna Post, Kantipur, Nagarik, The Kathmandu Post, The Himalayan Times and Republica have published reports about the death of Shyam Sundar Shrestha, a local of Chagal in Kathmandu, after he fell into an open manhole in Kirtipur. The reports have blamed Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited that distributes drinking water across the country, for opening the manhole time and again for repairs without putting up any warning sign.

Three killed in Kavre jeep accident

Kantipur has connected the cyclist’s death with the death of three other persons in a jeep accident in Churedhumka, Mandan Deupur of Kavre district. The victims include Nepal Police DIG Sushil Kumar Bhandari, journalist Jeevan Parajuli and Nepali Congress trade union leader Binod Karki, according to the reports.

Meanwhile, three persons have sustained injuries in the accident and are undergoing treatment, the reports inform.

Nepal, China military sign cooperation drill

Gorkhapatra, Naya Patrika and The Kathmandu Post report on their front pages that Nepal and China have signed a military cooperation drill in Beijing. The agreement was signed on the occasion of China visit of Nepal’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Ishwar Pokharel.

According to the agreement, China will provide a support worth Rs 2.5 billion to the Nepal Army within next five years.

Nepali Congress treasurer objects to ‘haphazard’ spending

Yadav has accused the party’s General Secretary Shashanka Koirala of leading the haphazard spending without proper documentation of reasons.

Govt prepares for directive to let provinces form police bodies

In a bid to settle the its growing tension with Province 2 government, the federal government is preparing to issue a directive letting the provincial governments enact laws on provincial police organisations, according to Kantipur lead story.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has already drafted the directive, but it is yet to be submitted to the Cabinet for the final decision, the report adds.

Election Commission wants to study overseas voting possibility

Following a Supreme Court order to make sure Nepalis living abroad can also get an opportunity to vote, the Election Commission is in mood to launch a study on how it can be implemented. However, the constitutional body does not have money to fund the research and it has sought the government support, The Himalayan Times reports in a two column story.

Non-filers to get removed off taxpayers’ list

Karobar reports in a three column story that the government is preparing to remove 30,000 taxpayers from the list of value added taxpayers as they failed to file taxes regularly and went incommunicado.

The task will begin after mid-January next year as announced by Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada during the last budget speech.
