Former Minister Mohammad Aftab Alam passes away

Kathmandu, November 10

Former minister and Nepali Congress leader Mohammad Aftab Alam has passed away.

According to hospital sources, he died at around 2:30 am last night on November 8 while undergoing treatment after his health condition deteriorated severely.

Alam had been receiving treatment on a ventilator at Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) for the past few days.

Narayan Prasad Dahal, chief of hospital management at KMC, said Alam had been admitted to the hospital two weeks ago and was treated directly in the ICU. His condition worsened further, and he was placed on a ventilator.

Doctors involved in his treatment said his kidneys had failed, and he had been undergoing regular dialysis.

Alam had suffered a brain stroke shortly after being released from Nakkhu Prison in May this year. At that time, he was treated at Annapurna Neuro Hospital in Maitighar and later went to India for further medical care. According to doctors, his death resulted from long-term complications following the brain stroke.

In 2008 (Chaitra 27, 2064 BS), on the eve of the Constituent Assembly elections, a bomb exploded while being made at the house of Alam’s uncle, Sheikh Indris, in Rajpur, Rautahat. The blast injured Trilok Pratap Singh, 22, the youngest son of Shrinayaran, and a local resident, Oshi Akhtar.

Instead of taking the injured for treatment, they were allegedly burned alive in a brick kiln. Alam was convicted of murder by the Rautahat District Court and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the High Court later overturned the verdict, releasing him from prison. Soon after his release, he suffered the brain stroke that ultimately led to his death.
