Floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall from September 25 to 27 have damaged houses, roads, bridges, drinking water projects, electricity infrastructure, and agricultural and livestock sectors in Tanahu district.

According to the District Disaster Management Committee, the disaster damaged suspension bridges, concrete bridges, culverts and roads at various locations in the district.

Committee chairperson and Chief District Officer Shiva Lal Tiwari said the committee had recommended that the concerned authorities expedite the reconstruction and maintenance of damaged infrastructure.

Five suspension bridges were completely destroyed. They include the bridge linking Ghiring Rural Municipality in Tanahu with Rampur Municipality in Palpa; the bridge connecting Atrauli in Ghiring-1 with Kasiban; the bridge linking Mandar in Baudikali Rural Municipality-2 with Kharsangghat; the bridge connecting Karuwatar with Maitighat-Machedi; and the bridge linking Devghat Rural Municipality-2 with Bulingtar Rural Municipality-1 in Nawalpur, Tiwari said.

The destruction of the bridges has made it difficult for residents and students to cross rivers.

Three other suspension bridges sustained partial damage. Flooding also partially damaged the Kaligandaki Mandar-Kharsangghat motorable bridge. Two culverts were damaged, and recommendations were made to the concerned authorities for their reconstruction.

Tiwari stressed the need to prioritise the reconstruction and maintenance of damaged roads, bridges and other public infrastructure.
