Five-party meet fails to resolve National Assembly election row

Kathmandu, December 22

A five-party meeting convened by the Prime Minister on Friday morning has ended with leaders failing to reach consensus on the issue of the election of members to the National Assembly.

The meeting in Baluwatar saw Federal Socialist Forum and Rastriya Janata Party support the Nepali Congress in its proposal to adopt the single-transferable-vote system to elect members to the upper house.

However, UML chief KP Sharma Oli expressed strong reservations against the proposal. “The Prime Minister told us that he wants political parties to agree with the provisions of the ordinance the government prepared,” said Maoist leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha.

Meanwhile, the Left Alliance urged the Nepali Congress to facilitate the formation of the new government.
