The number of ministries in the federal government has been reduced to 17.
Previously, the government had 22 ministries, including the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. The reduction was made through the revised Rules of Business Allocation.
The Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday approved the Rules of Business Allocation 2083, under which the federal government will now operate with 18 ministries, including the Prime Minister’s Office.
The list of merged and dissolved ministries will be published in the Nepal Gazette.
According to the government’s earlier preparations, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Water Supply and Sanitation, Ministry of Urban Development, and Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration are set to be dissolved.
The sports sector will be merged with the Ministry of Education, which will be renamed the Ministry of Education and Sports.
The youth portfolio separated from the Ministry of Youth and Sports will be integrated with the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens, as well as the Ministry of Health and Population and Social Security, to form a new Ministry of Gender Equality and Social Development.
Similarly, sanitation functions under the Ministry of Water Supply and Sanitation will be separated and merged into the Health Ministry. Water supply and urban development sectors will be merged with the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure, which will be renamed the Ministry of Integrated Physical Infrastructure.
