Former Prime Minister and Naya Shakti coordinator Baburam Bhattarai has said that the electoral system of the country needs to be changed if corruption is to be discouraged.

Speaking at a programme in Gulmi, Bhattarai said, “One reason for corruption in the country is the manner in which we spend money during the elections. This process has to be changed,” he added.

The former Prime Minister added that if the government provides basic funds for parties to contest elections, corruption can be controlled.

Bhattarai also added that if the country is to develop, local governments should become the most powerful part of the government. He also urged the citizens of the country to be vigilant and vote for honest leaders.
