Dr KC says won’t accept Medical Education Bill if his suggestions are ignored

Dr Govinda KC announces his fast-unto-death at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, in Kathmandu, on Monday, July 24, 2017.

Kathmandu, August 10

Senior orthopaedic surgeon at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Dr Govinda KC, says he will not accept the Medical Education Bill if his suggestions on the draft law and recommendations of Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led commission are ignored.

Dr KC has been fasting unto death at the TUTH putting forth various demands including endorsement of the bill. Recent media reports have said Parliament is preparing to endorse the bill very soon, but with a provision that will contradict Dr KC’s another demand.

Whereas Dr KC has been demanding that the new law bar establishment of new medical colleges in Kathmandu Valley for next 10 years, the House is inserting a provision that the medical colleges which have already completed procedures for the establishment before introduction of the law can be set up.

Issuing a statement today, the fasting doctor accuses the lawmakers of drafting the bill to meet interests of businesspersons and stopping the law from being student-oriented and people-oriented.

Clarifying that his protest is not against any particular political party, Dr KC says his strike will continue till the endorsement of a ‘right’ bill.
