Don’t look for excuses to evade elections: UML to ruling coalition

Mahendranagar, March 17

Leaders of CPN-UML, Nepal’s principal opposition party, have warned the ruling coalition not to look for excuses to evade the upcoming civic elections.

The UML leaders, who were speaking at a programme organised to mark the final leg of the party’s Mechi-Mahakali campaign, said the constitution amenedment bill presented by the government would pust the country towards conflict.

“That the elections cannot take place without an amendment to the constitution is a belief that will not do the country any good,” UML Chairman and former Prime Minister KP Oli told mediapersons at a programme in Mahendranagar He said the amendment was both unnecessary and unconstitutional, and that it was against the interest of the people and the country. “The amendment will not be passed under any circumstances,” he said.

The party has also objected the government’s breach of the election code of conduct by “distributing money” to ruling party cadres and making new political appointments.
