Kathmandu, January 13
The Centre for Education and Human Resource Development under the Ministry of Education has directed schools across the country to not give entrance exams to children willing to enrol in class 1.
The Early Childhood Development Section of the centre also directed stakeholders to not run entrance exam preparation classes for admission to the first standard.
Meanwhile, the centre says it has received complaints from guardians that some Montessori and private schools have failed to focus on children’s holistic development and give homework to suit their age.
It has appealed to the stakeholders to correct such activities.
There are a number of schools, especially in Kathmandu, that hold competitive entrance exams for hundreds of young children. Surprisingly, there are also institutions dedicated to running entrance preparation classes for those young kids.
As only a few of them can make it through the tests, experts believe such exams are not desirable for young children looking forward to the first grade as a failure there will have a long-term impact psychologically.
