Discussion held on status and challenges of art journalism in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, December 10

A discussion program on the theme “Status and Challenges of Art Journalism” was held on Wednesday at the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts, bringing together artists, journalists, researchers, and cultural stakeholders to reflect on the current state of art journalism in Nepal.

The program was organized by the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts and chaired by its Chancellor, Naradmani Hartamchali. Writer and journalist Narayan Dhungana presented a working paper on the status, challenges, and future direction of art journalism, highlighting its historical development, present practices, and the need for stronger institutional support to promote the field.

Journalist Sushila Tamang commented on the paper, emphasizing the declining space for art coverage in mainstream media after the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing contribution of women journalists in the sector. She also stressed the need for clear state-level policies to strengthen fine arts journalism in a structured and sustainable manner.

Several senior art and culture commentators, including Jagat Basista, Dibeshman Singh Pradhan, Om Prakash Ghimire, Dilli Acharya, Madhu Shahi, and Chandani Hamal, shared their views on the challenges facing art journalism and the importance of local-level reporting.

Chancellor Hartamchali said art journalism plays a vital role in strengthening local art activities and promoting social and cultural transformation. Member Secretary Devendra Kumar Kafle said fine arts are closely linked to national culture and civilization, and should be promoted at both national and international levels.

The event was attended by academy officials, artists, journalists, students, and representatives of various organizations.
