Passengers were left stranded after a bridge over the Sotang River in Thakre Rural Municipality–7 developed a sinkhole, completely halting traffic on the Prithvi Highway.
With the road obstructed, some travelers were seen carrying their luggage and continuing their journey on foot. Vehicles on either side of the damaged bridge remained stuck, forcing many to cross the bridge on foot and find alternate transportation on the other side.
SP Nareshraj Subedi of the Bagmati Province Traffic Police Office said diversion work has started, but there is no definite timeline for when an alternative route will be operational. A bulldozer has been deployed for the task.
A new bridge is currently under construction next to the old one. Authorities suspect that vibrations from the construction work may have caused damage to the old structure, resulting in the sinkhole.
